What to Look For In a Painting Professional

This initial consultation will also give you a chance to “check out” the company you select for the work.  Are they clean and neat in appearance?  Unfortunately, in today’s economy, many people are out of work and will take on any job to make some extra money.  They will show up for the appointment with paint stains on their clothing and look less than professional.  Although you may save a few dollars in the end, you may end up paying more to touch up a poor paint job, remove paint from floors and carpets and not have the professional paint job that you anticipated.

Details Matter When Hiring a Painting Professional

When you ask someone to come to your home for an estimate, do they pay attention to details?  Do they inspect the ceilings, baseboards and doors?  Do they make notes about cracks, water stains or uneven surfaces?  Water stains may be an indication of underlying mold which will require further inspection of the surface and removal of the drywall to see what is causing the water stain.

Verify who is responsible for moving and covering furniture – you or the painting company? Is time allocated in the estimate for sanding down the walls and repairing cracks?  Don’t “assume” that the painter will do the necessary prep work, but always ask if this is not specifically mentioned in the estimate.  You will want to read our article on “Steps to Prep for Painting” to get an idea if what is involved in the right preparation.

How many coats of primer are included in your estimate?  As a rule of thumb, you will want two coats to ensure that any underlying previous colors do not “seep” through the paint.  If not done properly, this is a problem that may not show up for several months when it is too late to do anything about the problem.

Standing Behind a Professional Painting Project

Make sure you ask about insurance.  Have the painting contractor you select show you proof of insurance.  You don’t want any surprises when there is an accident while the project is being completed.

Does the painting contractor offer a guarantee?  No one is perfect. What is their procedure if you notice a spot that was missed?  For how long is the guarantee good? Specifically, what does it cover?  Obviously, they can’t guarantee that you won’t change your mind about the color; however, there should be a guarantee regarding repairs and places that might have been missed.  Do they leave you with enough paint to touch up walls that get scratched and marked over time?
